Volume 7 (1996): A Kaleidoscope of Creativity

What underlies creativity? Interviews with 92 high creatives find social support important, especially the mentor-apprentice relationship. Can mothers be serious artists? Investigation reveals this to be a struggle, with no clear answers. One creative woman writer’s experiences detail this struggle. Theorizing about creativity, an author posits perception of a greater reality, a “thatness” behind our usual experience, making creativity akin to the mystical experience. And such linkage is specifically made in a study that compares the lives of Charles Darwin and Therese of Lisieux. Another study looks at which cultural qualities best support creativity and spiritual search. Creativity expresses through poetry and a haunting short story, while the question is raised again: can an actual moral life exceed the strictures of theory?
